November Outing: Pride

Pride

This film was inspired by an extraordinary true story.  It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families.  Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.  As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

October Outing: My Old Lady

We'll be seeing our beloved Maggie Smith starring in My Old Lady, as I said in my previous post. And now I can tell you when and where: Tuesday, Oct. 7, Varsity Cinema (ManuLife Centre at Bloor & Bay). Screen time is 4:15, so let's meet by the box office about 20 minutes earlier.
This is a bit later than we usually choose, but several people have told me that earlier times clash with their Life classes or other appointments and prevent them from enjoying Movie Club outings. So let's give this later time a try and see if we prefer it.
After the film, those who wish to have coffee, a snack or whatever will head downstairs to the Bloor Street Diner. There's no need to inform me if you plan to go to only the movie. But if you also plan to go to the restaurant, please notify me by noon Monday, Oct. 6, so I can make a reservation for the correct number of people.
While you wait for next Tuesday to roll around, here for your enjoyment are: a brief video tracing Dame Maggie's career and Kevin Kline's comments about working with her on My Old Lady:
